Welcome to the International Secondary School Eindhoven! I hope this website will give you a good introduction to our school and answer many of your questions concerning the services we offer our students and their families.
The ISSE is a school for some 270 students between the ages of 11 and 18, representing around 40 nationalities. We work in English, and all of our teachers are either native speakers of English, or very competent speakers of the language. We have been in existence since 1974. We were the second school in the Netherlands to start offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students in the final two years of school, and we are now fully authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, too. This means that we provide students with a rigorous and widely acclaimed curriculum, which has a coherent international philosophy, and yet is adaptable to the needs of individual students. We do our best to focus on individual excellence rather than judging students against others, and are delighted with the success rate of our seniors. ISSE graduates have gone on to study a wide range of subjects at universities and colleges around the world, including those considered to be among the very best.
The school has recently been through the rigorous accreditation process set by the Community of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) which measures the school against specific standards and expectations. I am very happy to say that the school received full accrediation in June 2007 and can now compare itself to other excellent internationl schools around the world.
Eindhoven was never really blessed with the architectural charm of most Dutch towns and cities, and what there was suffered considerably in the Second World War, when Eindhoven found itself literally in the centre of a lot of action. However, a certain Gerard Philips started up a light bulb factory in Eindhoven at the end of the 19th Century, and his company went on to become a household name and a global force which has put Eindhoven firmly on the world map. Today Eindhoven is one of Europe’s leading research and development centres, as well as a major European design centre. You will see signs of Eindhoven’s technological prowess and its commitment to design all around you.
The ISSE is part of foundation of Dutch state secondary schools, the Stedelijk College Eindhoven. This arrangement allows the Dutch government to provide a certain amount of funding for each student, and the Eindhoven City Council to provide our building. A few years ago the city provided us with a separate building which we refurbished, and which we are very pleased to call home.
Currently the ISSE is involved in a project with the Regional International School (RIS), the international primary school, and the city authorities to create a single international school in one location. Major projects such as this take a long time to overcome all the hurdles in the Netherlands, but watch this space!
The ISSE is a friendly school with a family feel. Community, tolerance and respect are some of our major values. We want our older and younger students to mix together and feel comfortable and welcome in the company of each other. Our parents are welcome in the school, and through their volunteer work, provide invaluable moral and material support. We welcome students of all backgrounds, and feel that each one enriches the school and our community. We strive to accept students of a wide range of abilities, and we provide formal support for a limited range of learning difficulties as well as social or emotional development problems.
We enjoy working closely with all of our families. If you are considering enrolling at our school, we look forward to welcoming you!
