Diploma Programme (DP)

The IB diploma, which is conferred by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), facilitates admission to virtually any university in the world.

The Diploma Programme's subjects, plus prerequisites such as the Extended Essay, studies in the Theory of Knowledge and a the programme called CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) not only provide valuable academic training, but also promote cultural awareness and understanding. This is in line with the International Baccalaureate goal of "educating the whole person and fostering a more compassionate and active citizenry".

Curriculum

The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts.

This is illustrated by a hexagon with the three parts of the core (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS) at its centre.

Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at Higher Level (HL), and the remaining three subjects are studied at Standard Level (SL).

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) Programme

It is a fundamental part of the Diploma Programme. The CAS requirement encourages interest and commitment beyond the classroom, and provides a healthy counterbalance to the academic self-absorption some may feel within a demanding school programme. Our goal of educating the whole person and fostering compassionate future citizens comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their books. Students are required to commit themselves to activities and projects throughout the two-year DP course, covering all three of the areas named, and largely in their own time.

All Diploma Programme (DP) candidates are required to participate in activities in each domain:

  • Creativity: to explore one's own creative potential
  • Action: to fulfill the classical ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body, and to instill a life-long habit of physical activity
  • Service: to sensitize students to the needs of others and to the satisfaction that comes from sharing one's talents.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

It  is a required interdisciplinary course intended to stimulate critical reflection upon the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom.

A key element in the IBO's educational philosophy, TOK seeks to develop a coherent approach to learning which transcends and unifies the academic subjects and encourages appreciation of other cultural perspectives.

Extended Essay (EE)

All diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an extended essay of some 4000 words.

This project offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and acquaints students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university.
